The Office of Building Safety is pleased to provide guidelines for the permit application process for the installation of solar panels. View the materials and learn how to obtain a permit and start saving energy now.

Permit Application

An online permit may be applied through the City of Milpitas Online Permitting System for the following permit types:

Permit Type: ONL SOL 

  • Please select "ONL SOL" as the permit type in the dropdown menu.
  • This permit will allow the installation of solar panel system up to a maximum of 10kW (DC MAX) without electrical panel upgrade. This permit does not include Energy Storage System (ESS) installation.
  • Electrical plans shall be provided to the City inspector at the job site for plan review and inspection.

Permit Type: ONL SOL WITH PANEL 

  • Please select "ONL SOL WITH PANEL" as the permit type in the dropdown menu.
  • This permit will allow the installation of solar panel system up to a maximum of 10kW (DC MAX) with electrical panel upgrade up to a maximum of 200 amps. This permit does not include Energy Storage System (ESS) installation.
  • Electrical plans shall be provided to the City inspector at the job site for plan review and inspection.
